Hi Families!
Last week was a wonderful week filled with lots of learning!
Class Updates:
IXL: All student logins are first initial then last name @melroseeps
Example: kamari@melroseps
All passwords are set to "abcd"
The website is: https://www.ixl.com/
Math:
We continued to work on addition. We learned how to add groups together, write addition equations, and solve an addition equation when both addends are unknown. Some vocabulary words we worked on are: addend, add to, addition equation, sum, equal, part-part-whole, more, whole. We also introduced subtraction. Some key words are: take away, subtract, minus, equals, part, fewer, difference.
Reading:
In Reading, we started the week with an introduction to our Amazing Words: adult, depend, gallery, scurry, childhood, portrait, entertain. We then clapped and cheered our High-Frequency (Sight) Words: like, one, the, we. We even looked at words that have a short a sound (ex. sat, mat, at), and the p /p/ (pat, pal, etc.) and n /n/ (no, new, etc) sounds. We then began our story of the week, "Snap!" by Jacqui Briggs, Illustrated by Hector Borlasca. Ask your student to read these words to you! We also talked a lot about characters and setting. Talk with your student about what characters are (people or animals, can be real or fake, etc.). Setting is where the story takes place!
Writing:
In Writing, we worked on writing about one thing we did over the weekend ("Over the weekend, I..."), and we talked about how we can choose a topic to write about. Feel free to ask your student about a topic they have written about so far in first grade! (Hint: If they say they forgot, one of our topics was what the setting is in "Snap!")
Hope you all have a great week!!
